About The BCE Podcast

Our Vision

The BCE Podcast, hosted by Adam Holt of NameDatBug Consulting and co-host Chelle Hartzer of 360 Pest Consulting, serves as an engaging platform for aspiring entomologists—especially those with a passion for pest control—to explore the real-world paths and career trajectories in the field (Apple Podcasts). Through in-depth conversations with fellow Board Certified Entomologists (BCEs), the podcast highlights how professional certification and varied backgrounds shape successful futures in entomology.

Episode #1 features a candid conversation with fellow BCE Laura Krueger of Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District. Laura discusses how her lifelong interest in bugs led from biology studies at University of Michigan to public health research at Yale and ultimately into vector control—a journey that underscores the diversity of opportunities available to those pursuing a career in entomology (Apple Podcasts). It's an excellent example of how the podcast makes the career-building process feel tangible and attainable.

At its core, The BCE Podcast emphasizes the importance of the BCE certification offered by the Entomological Society of America (ESA). Earning a BCE demonstrates rigorous standards of education, experience, and ethics—qualities that distinguish certified individuals in both industry and research settings (EntoCert, Entomology Today).

What It Takes to Earn a BCE from ESA:

The Board Certified Entomologist is ESA’s premier credential in the discipline—esteemed among entomologists worldwide (Entomology Today). Though not mandatory to belong to ESA, applicants are often ESA members to benefit from discounted certification fees (EntoCert).

To apply for BCE status, one must submit a complete application, including academic transcripts, a current CV, two professional references, application fees (which include the first exam attempt), and demonstrate sufficient education and professional experience (EntoCert). There are also alternative paths—such as BCE Intern for those meeting educational but not experience requirements, or BCE-Administrative for professionals whose responsibilities are more managerial—though those applicants must meet specific criteria and may have modified continuing requirements (EntoCert).

Once accepted into the program, the applicant has one year to schedule and take the exam, overseen by a proctor of their choosing (Entomology Today). Upon success, recipients earn formal credentials—including a certificate, BCE designation, and registration in ESA’s BCE directory—and agree to uphold a professional code of ethics (EntoCert, Entomology Today).

Why the Podcast Matters for Future Entomologists

The BCE Podcast stands out for its focus on relatable stories and practical advice. By interviewing diverse, real-world BCEs, the hosts shine a light on how professionals reached where they are—whether through academic research, public health, pest control consulting, or regulation. Episodes like the one featuring Laura Krueger make the pursuit of a career in entomology feel both inviting and supported, especially for students or early-career professionals trying to figure out their next steps.

Beyond narratives, the podcast underscores the BCE as a valuable credential that signals a practitioner’s expertise, credibility, and commitment to ethical practice. In doing so, it helps listeners understand not just what the BCE is, but also why it matters—and how it can elevate a career.

Overall, The BCE Podcast is a powerful tool for any budding entomologist—especially those drawn to pest control—offering inspiration, practical insight into certification, and a window into the varied, impactful roles BCE holders play in science and public health.
