WHAT IS A "QUALITY ASSURANCE" PROGRAM?

A Quality Assurance program in pest control ensures that pest management activities in food facilities meet the strict regulatory, safety, and documentation requirements demanded by international food safety standards such as AIB (American Institute of Baking), BRC (British Retail Consortium), and SQF (Safe Quality Food).

It emphasizes prevention, thorough documentation, transparency, risk-based pest control measures, continuous monitoring and verification of effectiveness to ensure food safety and regulatory compliance.

Key Components:

  • Risk Assessment:
Identify and evaluate pest risks specific to the facility, especially critical areas like raw material storage, production zones, and loading docks.
(Required by AIB, BRC, and SQF)

  • Written Pest Management Program:
Maintain a detailed, formalized program including scope, responsibilities, approved chemicals, pest thresholds, emergency actions, and corrective measures.
(Strongly required by BRC and SQF; AIB expects clearly defined protocols.)

  • Service Provider Requirements:
Pest control providers must be licensed, trained, and audited annually. Contracts must specify services, inspection frequencies, reporting, and corrective actions.
(AIB and BRC require service provider documentation; SQF requires service validation.)

  • Monitoring and Inspections:
Regular monitoring using traps, bait stations, insect light traps, and visual inspections. Maps of all monitoring devices must be updated and available on-site.
(BRC and AIB are strict on monitoring points and mapping.)

  • Documentation and Record-Keeping:
Complete, up-to-date records of inspections, findings, corrective actions, pesticide usage, licenses, and training certificates must be maintained and easily retrievable.
(All three standards are extremely focused on accessible documentation.)

  • Corrective Actions:
Any pest sightings or activity must trigger documented corrective actions, root cause analysis, and follow-up inspections.
(BRC and SQF focus on root cause analysis; AIB demands quick resolution.)

  • Internal Audits and Program Review:
Conduct internal audits of the pest management program at least annually and review results to identify trends or needed improvements.
(BRC and SQF require documented verification of pest control program effectiveness.)

  • Training:
Facility staff must receive training on pest awareness and reporting procedures.
(SQF is very detailed about staff training; BRC also expects pest awareness training.)

implementation of a "Quality Assurance" Program

When "NameDatBug Consulting" implements a unique "QA (Quality Assurance) Program" for your company, it will look something like this.

Forms

These customized forms will be completed via google to include industry standard questions based on key components for any successful customer journey.

Questions

The goal of an internal quality assurance program is to create accountability for all involved parties such as a pest control technician, service manager, company owner, etc.

(“Trust by verify” is an excellent quote I learned long ago.  While this is not a form of micromanagement.  It is a way to ensure your customer’s account is maintain at the highest standard.)

QA Question Example

During this month, were ALL devices checked according to the above "Scope of Service"?

This includes but is not limited to the following:

(1) Exterior rodent bait stations (RBS)

(2) Interior tin cats (TC)

(3) Interior fly lights (ILT)

(4) Beetle domes (Pheromone monitors)

(5) Storgard (Indianmeal moth) traps (Pheromone monitors)

(6) Ground Squirrel Bait Stations

(While all devices are NOT checked on the same frequency, they should ALL be checked within a single calendar month.)

Data

Trends and analysis are crucial to any customer account.  Even more important is the ability of how to analyze, evolve and implement new IPM strategies based on results.

Technical Training

Technicians need adequate and consistent technical training around IPM (integrated pest management) strategies, insect biology and identification and much, much more!  It is also imperative for a service manager to review QA’s with the associated pest control technician serving the account.
